  • I loved this colorful view of all the baby duck boats with the big “mother” ship in the background.  This was on Lake Yamanaka which isn’t too far from Fujiyoshida, Japan.

  • The Hakkoda snow monsters are the tops of pine trees that have been encrusted with snow.  The base of the trees is 3+ meters down from here.  I shot this as we skied and snow boarded down through the forest on Mt. Hakkoda near Aomori, Japan.

  • The F-16 is firing it's 20mm vulcan cannon at test targets on Droughon Range near Misawa AB, Japan.  You can see the smoke around the plane as the guns fire and this frame captured 5 rounds in the air. I was fortunate to be able to stand on the exterior of the control tower to get this view.

  • This is an underside view of the giant red lantern that hangs in the entry gate to the Asakusa Shrine in Tokyo.  Most people will walk through without ever looking underneath to see the detailed wood carving.  I arrived at 9:30am on this day to beat the crowds.  The walkway lined with shops leading to the shrine will be packed with people later in the morning.

  • The towing bamboo in the Arashiyama bamboo forest makes the people look tiny.  The pathways through the forest allow visitors to stroll through and admire the ‘forest’.  However, it can get crowded on the narrow walkways.

  • The Hayabusa Super Express Shinkansen train runds from Tokyo to Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido,  It's a wonderful ride at 320kph.  I rode it many times from Hachinohe to Tokyo over the years.  The ride is just under 3 hours.

  • This is one of many drum floats in the Nebuta Festival parade.  Many floats have relief drummers to trade off with.  The noise level at the Nebuta parade defies description.  The drums, flutes, bells and chanting will be ringing in your ears... but it's worth it!  It's one of the best festivals in Japan!

  • A Japanese mailman in Misawa, Japan delivering mail on a motorbike in the snow.  They have chains on the back tire and he uses his feet like skiis to stabilize himself.  I had seen this many times over the years but always failed to get the shot.  This time I spotted the mailman as I was walking ouf of the house.  I ran back in to get my camera and was able to get this image and a couple of other before he got away.
