Potala Just After Sunrise

This splendid image of Potala Palace was taken from the rooftop of our hotel which was about a mile away. The sun had just come over the mountains to the East bathing the palace in wonderfuly warm light.

Potala Reflection

This entire image is a reflection of Potala Palace in a pond. If you look closely you can see the people walking upside-down. The image original image was flipped both vertically and horizontally to give the proper perspective. Although I seldom 'touch-up' images for presentation I couldn't resist removing some of the floating trash. The Photoshop CS2 healing brush did a wonderful job.

Classic Potala

This classic view shows the grand scale of the hilltop palace. Unfortunately the angle of the sun crated shadows on the front.

White Palace

This is one palace within the Potala complex.

Shock Absorber

The layer of flexible wood is put between the stones to absorb the shaking created by earthquakes.

Potala Pilgrims

Dave with Pilgrims

This group of pilgrims wanted to get their pictures taken with a tourist. In this case it was my brother Dave.

Monks

These monks were about to ascend the many stairs to Potala Palace.

"Liberation" Monument

The monument in the square below Potala was built by the Chinese government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the “liberation” of Tibet from their independence.

Potala with Edited Sky

I was very annoyed that we didn't get a chance to shoot pictures of the palace with the reflecting pond in the foreground with clear skies. On the day we initially visited Potala we weren't given enough time to get to the pond for pictures. On subsequent days there were usually clouds over the palace when the sun was on the front. I shot the picture anyway but felt compelled to replace the sky!

Describing Norbulingka

Our guide, Wang Dui, is shown describing the layout of the Norbulingka Summer Place complex.
