Old Town Square
The stunning Golz-Kinsky Palace is to the left and the
gothic Church of Our Lady before Tyn is to the right.
Center of Activity
The Old Town Square is always bustling with activity.
The square was being set up for a huge party during the world hockey
championships. In the evening the square was packed with people watching
the game. A celebration ensued when the Czech Republic won the championship
game.
Church of St. Nicholas
The imposing facade of this Baroque church dominates one corner of the
Old Town Square.
Old Town Hall Tower
This impressive town hall built in 1338 is best known for it's astronomical
clock.
Astronomical Clock
The clock draws crowds to watch the procession of the
12 Apostles at the top doors. Other figures such as the skeleton on
the right, a Turk who shakes his head from side to side and Vanity who
looks at himself in the mirror. The clock shows time in three different
ways. The outer ring of medieval Arabic numerals measures Old Bohemian
time, The ring of Roman numerals indicates time as we know it. The blue
part of the dial divides the day into 12 parts as measured in Babylonian
time. It also shows the movement of the sun and moon through the 12
zodiac signs.
Ornate Facade
This ornate building was originally built as the Prague
City Insurance Company in 1898. The mural and statues are images of
firefighters. Today it houses the Ministry of Commerce.
Musicians in the Square
These musicians were playing Dixieland jazz in the Old Town Square.
Powder Gate and Municipal House
The Powder Gate dates back to the 11th century. It was
one of 13 entrances to the Old Town. The municipal house to the right
is a cultural center today with exhibition halls and a large auditorium.
It is Prague's principal concert venue.
Homage to Prague Mosaic
This Homage to Prague mosaic by Karel Spillar adorns the facade of the
Municipal House.

Judgment adorns one of the entrances to St. Vitus Cathedral.

glass.
