Diego Garcia

This travel photography section concentrates on the tropical island of Diego Garcia. This British Indian Ocean Territory is the peak of the lost continent of Limuria. The V shaped coral atoll stretches 36 miles from tip to tip but is a mere 10 square miles in size. PhotoMann had the opportunity to visit DG on multiple occasions during the 1990's with his 'day job'. Interested in more details? Travel Article Check out the accompanying travel article.

Sunrise

This spectacular sunrise was over the lagoon. Small boats are visible in the foreground and larger cargo ships behind them.

Indian Ocean

Beautiful vistas can be found on very beach.

Indian Ocean

Another view from a different beach.

Marina

The marina in the lagoon offers sail and power boat rentals as well as jet skis.

Cargo Ships

The lagoon is full of cargo ships with pre-positioned supplies and equipment.

Stroll on the Beach

A relaxing stroll on the beach is a great escape.

East Point Plantation

The manager's house at the old East Point Plantation. The chapel is in the background. Both buildings have been restored.

Company Store

The plantation store is in rough shape.

Wrecked RAF Catalina

This Royal Air Force Catalina that crashed in 1944. It sits on the beach at the East Point Plantation. It's in remarkably good condition... for a nearly 60 year old wreck DG was a refueling base for naval craft and flying boats in World War II.

Cannon Point

Two six-inch naval guns were installed in 1942 to defend against the Japanese threat in World War II.

Ship Store

Today's ship store in downtown DG includes this sign showing the extreme distances from the island. California is 10,500 miles away. Florida is 10,100 miles in the other direction!

Beach Volleyball

Outdoor sports is a common island activity. Drinking is the other!

Expat Club

The Expat Club overlooks the beach in the area where most of the Filipino contract workers live. The club is a great place to have pizza and beer while watching the colorful sunsets.

I'm sorry to say there are no available books on Diego Garcia. "Peak of Limuria - The Story of Diego Garcia" by Richard Edis (Bellew Publishing, London, ISBN 1 85725 070 2) does offer a good read on DG history but unfortunately it's out of print.
